AI Overviews and SEO: how to get your content featured

Search a question on Google today and there's a good chance the answer appears before you even reach the blue links. That's an AI Overview, and it's changed what SEO success actually looks like.

This guide breaks down what AI Overviews are, why they matter and the practical steps you can take today to improve your chances of being featured. Whether you're new to the topic or refreshing an existing strategy, this is where AI Overviews and SEO meet in practice.

    What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google shows at the top of certain search results. They pull information from multiple sources, condense it into a direct answer and link out to the sites that the answer came from.

Google now shows an AI Overview for a large share of searches, and that share continues to grow as the technology matures.

How do AI overviews affect traditional SEO strategies?

Traditional SEO often focused heavily on earning clicks. AI Overviews add another measure of success: being visible and cited within the answer itself.

That distinction matters because AI Overviews change user behaviour in a big way. Some searchers now get their answer directly from the summary and don’t need to scroll down to the organic results at all. We've covered this shift in detail in our piece on zero-click searches and how AI Overviews are changing the game.

That doesn't mean visibility is pointless if nobody clicks. Being named as a source, even without a click-through, puts your brand in front of a searcher at the exact moment they're looking for what you offer. It's a trust signal and a discovery channel rolled into one, and it's why SEO for AI Overviews is an important part of a content strategy.

If you want the bigger picture on how generative search is reshaping the SERP as a whole, our article on how AI-powered search is changing SEO (and how it isn't) is a good companion read to this one.

How does Google decide what to feature?

Google's systems run something called query fan-out. Rather than answering your search with a single lookup, they run several related searches behind the scenes and combine the results into one answer.
That means AI Overviews often pull from more than one page, and often reward content that anticipates the questions a searcher hasn't typed yet. If your page only answers the exact keyword and nothing more, you could be leaving gaps for a competitor's content to fill.

This helps build a clearer picture of your website’s authority and highlights opportunities that may not be obvious through automated tools alone.

So how can you improve your chances of being featured?

There's no one formula for success here, but we do know that Google’s AI has to trust a source before it cites it.

E-E-A-T (which is Google's shorthand for experience, expertise, authority and trust) is a strong indicator of content quality, plus the technical health and genuine usefulness of your website.

SEO for AI Overviews: 8 strategies that actually work

We asked our own SEO team what's actually worked for clients targeting AI Overviews. Here's what came back, minus a few of the finer details we're keeping for people who work with us directly.

    At a glance, that means:

    • When answering a specific question, answer it in the first one or two sentences and be direct
    • FAQs should be answer-first, specific and not generic
    • Anticipate any follow-up questions, and answer those too
    • Keep headings specific and not vague
    • Cite authoritative external sources to reinforce any claims
    • Add a valuable piece of information that isn't already everywhere
    • Make sure your website is technically strong
    • Refresh the details, not just the date of old blog content

    Here's why each one matters.

    1. Answer the question in the first one or two sentences

Don't bury your answer under three paragraphs of waffle. If it reads like corporate fluff, cut it and say the actual thing.

Give a clear, direct answer near the top of the section, then use the rest of the content to add depth. It makes the answers easier for readers to find and keep, rather than making them dig through copy to find the useful parts.

    2. Keep FAQs specific and answer-first

Generic FAQs don't add much. Focus on the questions people genuinely ask about the topic, then answer each one directly before adding the detail.

If you're writing about a service, that could mean covering cost, timeframes, suitability or how results are measured. The aim is to answer the questions directly, not give a vague, fluffy answer that feels generic.

    3. Anticipate the follow-up questions

AI Overviews tend to stitch together answers to a whole topic, not just the exact phrase someone searched. Think about what a reader would naturally ask next and build those follow-ups into your structure.

    4. Keep headings specific, not vague

"Things to consider" tells Google nothing. "How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?" tells Google exactly what the section is for, and it makes individual sections far easier to cite.

Specific headings also naturally support featured snippets and People Also Ask results alongside AI Overviews, so you're covering more ground with the same content.

We go over this in more depth in why a good header structure is like a well-written book.

    5. Cite external sources to reinforce any claims

If you're making a factual claim, it’s important to back it up with a trustworthy source. Government guidance, original research and recognised industry bodies give readers somewhere to verify what you're saying.

External links can make your content more useful, transparent and credible, especially when you're discussing technical information.

    6. Add something that isn't already everywhere

Generic content is becoming far less useful now that AI can summarise the same information itself. Original data, first-hand client examples, expert quotes and real screenshots are what separate a page worth citing from a page worth skimming.

We've seen this play out directly with our own clients. Intergas Heating Solutions now shows up in over 160 AI search results, Drainfast has racked up 415, and JW Vending picked up 15 AI Overview mentions for high-value customer queries.

None of this happened by accident. It came from building genuinely useful content, strong structure and solid technical foundations.

    7. Get the technical foundations right

None of the above matters if Google can't crawl and understand your site in the first place. Clean site architecture, fast load times and solid internal linking all help both AI systems and human readers find their way around your content.

Our technical SEO services cover exactly this groundwork if it's not something you've got sorted yet.

    8. Refresh the details, not just the date

Updating a blog's publish date without touching the content is a bit of a cop-out. Refresh the actual content instead: updated stats, new examples, current screenshots and recommendations that reflect how things stand today. That's what gives Google a genuine reason to treat your page as current.

Want a clearer picture of where your content stands right now?

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

Established websites can appear in AI Overviews in as little as a few weeks, whereas lower authority sites can take 3-6 months to appear.

There's no fixed timeline; it all depends on the website’s existing authority, how competitive the topic is and how well-structured the content already is. Sites with strong technical foundations tend to see results faster than those starting from scratch.

How to track your AI Overview visibility

SEO for AI visibility needs proper measurement. There are a few ways to track it:

    • Use your existing SEO platform. Tools like Semrush and Ahrefs now let you filter your ranking keywords by whether they trigger an AI Overview, and whether your site is named as a source within it. Run this monthly alongside your usual rank tracking, and keep an eye on which pages get cited so you can spot the patterns in what's working.
    • Check manually for your most important terms. Search them yourself (ideally within an incognito tab, to avoid personalisation skewing results). Just note whether an AI Overview appears and check whether you're named.
    • Get support from an SEO agency like Sherbet Donkey. When clients work with us, they get dedicated quarterly reports going through keyword performance, AI Overview and ChatGPT visibility, plus enquiries and sales data. Just contact our team to find out more about how Sherbet Donkey can help you grow.

Is there a guaranteed way to rank in AI Overviews?

Getting AI Overviews and SEO working together is about consistent groundwork, not a one-off trick. That’s exactly the approach behind the results our SEO case studies show, including AI search appearances alongside the traditional traffic and ranking wins.

Our AI SEO services bring traditional search and AI visibility into one joined-up strategy, using structured data, content planning and reporting that tracks AI mentions alongside traditional rankings.
